700 Volunteers Acted Removing 13,000 Pounds of Noxious Litter from our Lagoon and Beaches during the International Coastal Cleanup on September 17th.
The importance of the Indian River Lagoon and our beaches to our community is without question. Every year, Keep Indian River Beautiful coordinated a community-wide effort to remove litter from the Lagoon and coastline as part of the International Coastal Cleanup, hosted worldwide by the Ocean Conservancy.
Over 700 volunteers walked along beaches or boated and kayaked along waterways, picking up an estimated 13,000 pounds of litter from 25 different locations throughout Indian River county. Nearly double the number from last year’s cleanup. Volunteers were also provided data cards or used the Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell App to count each piece of litter they collected. This data will be analyzed to benefit our local cleanup efforts before being calculated world-wide to affect World Ocean policies.
Keep Indian River Beautiful provides supplies throughout the year to volunteers willing to help such as gloves, trash bags, and hand sanitizer. Mark your calendars for all of the next International Coastal Cleanup dates, every 3rd Saturday of September. For more pictures of the volunteers and event information, follow us on Facebook.com/KeepIndianRiverBeautiful.
