Our mission is to empower individuals to take greater responsibility for community environments by involving volunteers in litter prevention, beautification, recycling and conservation education.

“Adopt-A” Programs
Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Shore, Adopt-A-Road, Adopt-A-Street, Adopt-A-Fishing Line Bin.  Groups/individuals “adopt” these areas for a period of two years and perform a minimum of four cleanups per year.

Thanks to the Florida Department of Transportation for their help with these programs.

Community Education Programs
KIRB provides education programs for the community about litter reduction and prevention through presentations at schools, other community functions and exhibits.  In the schools we use our mascot Garbby in an effort to help students develop “good” behavior/habits in being responsible stewards of their community.

Clean Boater Program
The Clean Boater Program is promoted to boaters and fishermen at such functions as fishing tournaments, boat shows, fishing clubs, etc., to promote responsibility of fishermen and boaters with their litter, recyclables and fishing line.

Reuse/Exchange Center
Keeping in line with the 4R’s education (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Rethink) and diverting items from the landfill, we have a branch at our facility that gathers used materials for reuse for craft, school, and other projects.  These materials include egg cartons, silk flowers, craft supplies, business supplies, coffee cans, fabric, calendars, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, etc.  Residents save these used materials, rather than throw them away, and bring them to our Reuse/Exchange Center.  Volunteers then sort the materials and arrange them so that the public can “shop” for items they can reuse/exchange.

MRRP (Monofilament Recovery & Recycling Program)
The Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program of Indian River County is dedicated to recycling monofilament fishing line. MRRP has placed more than thirty white PVC recycling bins at boat ramps, piers and beach accesses throughout the county where fishermen and beachgoers can discard fishing line. The line is then collected by a volunteer and dropped off at a local tackle shop. The shop then mails the line to the Berkley Pure Fishing Company, which uses the line to make fish habitats, tackle boxes and toys.

CLPP (Cigarette Litter Prevention Program)
November 2012 Keep Indian River Beautiful (KIRB) WON 3rd PLACE IN THE NATION for our CLPP dedication.  We conducted another Cigarette Litter Prevention Program that took place at the Vero Beach City Marina, where we installed a Bait Tank receptacle for distinguishing butts.
Counting discarded cigarette butts was the first action in collecting data for the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program study which we collected 2000 butts.  Two months later KIRB returned to the area to survey the cigarette debris again, and collected only 30 butts & found the Bait Tank Receptacle had over 1500 butts inside.  This is a HUGE reduction in the number of butts left behind.  KIRB also passed out ash trays and pocket ash trays to all the adult smokers and continues to give them out daily.
