“Adopt-A” Programs
Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Shore, Adopt-A-Road, Adopt-A-Street,
Adopt-A-Fishing Line Bin. Groups/individuals “adopt” these areas for a
period of two years and perform a minimum of four cleanups per year.
Thanks to the Florida Department of Transportation for their help with these programs.
Community Education Programs
KIRB
provides education programs for the community about litter reduction
and prevention through presentations at schools, other community
functions and exhibits. In the schools we use our mascot Garbby in an
effort to help students develop “good” behavior/habits in being
responsible stewards of their community.
Clean Boater Program
The
Clean Boater Program is promoted to boaters and fishermen at such
functions as fishing tournaments, boat shows, fishing clubs, etc., to
promote responsibility of fishermen and boaters with their litter,
recyclables and fishing line.
Reuse/Exchange Center
Keeping
in line with the 4R’s education (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Rethink) and diverting
items from the landfill, we have a branch at our facility that gathers
used materials for reuse for craft, school, and other projects. These
materials include egg cartons, silk flowers, craft supplies, business
supplies, coffee cans, fabric, calendars, bubble wrap, packing peanuts,
etc. Residents save these used materials, rather than throw them away,
and bring them to our Reuse/Exchange Center. Volunteers then sort the
materials and arrange them so that the public can “shop” for items they
can reuse/exchange.
MRRP (Monofilament Recovery & Recycling Program)
The Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program of Indian River County is dedicated to recycling monofilament fishing line. MRRP has placed more than thirty white PVC recycling bins at boat ramps, piers and beach accesses throughout the county where fishermen and beachgoers can discard fishing line. The line is then collected by a volunteer and dropped off at a local tackle shop. The shop then mails the line to the Berkley Pure Fishing Company, which uses the line to make fish habitats, tackle boxes and toys.
CLPP (Cigarette Litter Prevention Program)
On June 12, 2009 Keep Indian
River Beautiful (KIRB) conducted another Cigarette Litter Prevention
Program that took place on Indian
River Drive, in Sebastian by RiverviewPark.
Counting discarded cigarette
butts is the first action in collecting data for the Cigarette Litter
Prevention Program study.In the
following weeks KIRB will return to the area to survey the cigarette debris
again, in hopes that there is a reduction in the number of butts left
behind.KIRB will also install ash
receptacles in the area in order to help with the debris.

information on litter prevention, please contact KIRB at 772-388-5472.
